The 5th Annual Pumpkins in the Park was held on Saturday, October 11th, at the Mayfield-Graves County Fairgrounds. Pumpkins in the Park originated from an idea that was sparked by the two local cooperatives, West Kentucky RECC, and WK&T, who wanted to join forces to do something good for our communities, which is one of the key founding principles for cooperatives.
Once the partnership was formed, the brainstorming and planning began, and the result was "Pumpkins in the Park." The first event was held at the WK&T Tech Park. The event displayed a helicopter candy drop, inflatables, snacks, and treats sponsored by local churches and businesses, an outdoor egg hunt, train rides, and more. After the first event, both organizations knew that they were on to something, by seeing the turnout and the smiles on everyone's faces.
Eventually, the event grew too large, and organizers decided to move to the Fairgrounds in Mayfield. Since then, the event has nearly tripled in size and has become one of the staple events during the month-long celebration called "Haunted Graves."
Each year, event organizers begin planning in the spring with the intention to stay creative and continue to freshen up the event. This year, new ideas included a princess tea party with Cinderella, tons of other characters, including the Addam's Family, Cruella Deville, Beauty and the Beast, and more. There was a haunted egg hunt maze, haunted carriage rides, hayrides, inflatables, food donated and served by local churches, face tattoos and pumpkin painting.
It is estimated that around 1600 people were in attendance, and with each new year the event continues to surpass attendance records.
WKRECC and WK&T look forward to planning another wonderful event next year.
